People, what is the purpose of our existence? Even though we come from a different race, culture, and family, there is something that is common to all of us. We have our feelings and emotions; it may differ in some degree but still we feel something. Whatever our economic status and position we might have in life, we share common things with others. Many people say that we are all breathing the same air and that it comes from only one source. We are standing in one common ground and most of all we are under the same sky. Maybe people will argue with this, they would say that their place is different from others. America is different from the Philippines. England is different from Africa. But you can never argue with the fact that we are living in one planet; that we are breathing the same air that is free. We are standing on the ground no matter who we are. The air around is the source of life that we all have. You can buy everything that you have. You can buy water that may be sweeter, but can we consider it water if it is sweet? We have the same needs in order to survive. We may differ from the kind and sources of our needs, but still they are needs and all people must have them to survive.
With all the different statuses that we have, we share things in common and one of the most important thing is we have feelings and emotions. No matter how powerful we are, we are capable of emotions. We are capable of pains, happiness and all the emotions that we have. But sometimes, in some extent, we have different ways on how we handle it. And whether we like it or not the way we handle it has a big impact on what character values we really have. It speaks what kind of family we have, what our priorities in life are. Educators said that a child’s mind is a blank tablet, or they called it Tabularasa, meaning it is empty and everyday as he grows he learns experience which is deposited in his mind. If we’re talking about our behavior, many people justify that it is the way they are. But for me I think it is a choice on what character one has.
I want to talk about being so mean. Why do many people experience humiliation? Why does it affect their lives? Because there are people who are mean. Who are proud that they think they can do everything that they are capable of doing? They always get what they want. Some say that people who are like this have strong personalities. Do you agree with that? If this suggests strong personality, I would rather become weak. Why? Because I am sure that I can hurt no one. Most of us go to school to earn a degree, but did we really think what the purpose of becoming educated is? Being educated is someone who knows what is best and what is not. Our teacher gives us situations and theories that we will be able to learn in our life in order for us to grow; with the most important thing being that we become a better person. But we should not also forget the saying, “Educated but not Learned.” Does this saying apply to us? Of course, yes!!! We can see around that there are a lot of people who are considered a figure of their own endeavor, but they are not doing what they are expected to do. They don’t have any respect for those people working below them. They forget that without their subordinates, their business will not prosper; that those people who are poor are the people who make them rich.
Being mean is not an excuse of your status in life. Nobody has the right to become mean because he is rich, or he is powerful. Nobody can justify and say “that’s the way he is.” If you claim yourself as a learned person, you should know what comes out from your mouth. There is no such thing as a slip of the tongue. Whatever is in your heart comes out by the way you speak. And we people who are aware of that should always have the courage to tell them how mean they are. Even though they have the privilege to buy all the things that they want, they don’t have the right to humiliate any person no matter how poor and how small because they don’t own the world. They should remember that our life is a gift; that there is one universal truth -- that we came from one parent. And when we die the most important thing that we can leave behind is the love and service that we gave to our fellowmen.
John Dunn said that “No man is an Island.” We need others in order for us to grow and prosper. We need others in order to be happy. Do you think you can have satisfaction and happiness with just the mere fact that you have money? That you can do and say whatever you have in your mind? Regardless if you are hurting someone, regardless if you ruin one’s life and reputation? At first it can be, but as you go along in life I know your conscience will become your enemy. It will be the one who will haunt you about the things you have done. Spiritually speaking we came here in order to learn, in order to become like our Heavenly Father. Do you think He will be happy to see us that we are hurting our brethren? Do you think He will be happy to see us when time will come? And what will you tell Him if he asks about all the things that we have done? Do you think it won’t bother your conscience?
We are all here to live, to grow, and to learn. We are here in order to become happy and to develop experiences that make us a better person. Someone who is a well developed individual, to reach our divine nature and potential. Every people no matter how small they are, no matter how poor and ugly they are, and no matter how different they are from us they still deserve love, respect, and honor. Because in a way or another we need someone. We need them as we go on in our life. We are all here to learn and to help each other. Being mean destroys the purpose of why we are here. It destroys ones confidence, and it can even destroy the future of someone. Being mean destroy our character and personality. It will never lead us in to anything good. But it leads us to something that we will never like to be in the future.
